Exercises That Increase Fitness Levels While Fighting Cancer, written by David Haas
Fighting cancer proves to be a physically challenging task. Most patients do not feel that they can add exercising to their daily routines. They have enough of a challenge just getting out of bed, going to work, and taking care of their families and households, all the while undergoing cancer treatments, such as treatment for mesothelioma cancer. However, as demanding as their schedules may be, they could improve their chances of recovery and remission by working out everyday. They do not necessarily have to buy a gym membership or leave their houses to exercise. Instead, physical therapists suggest that exercising can comfortably and conveniently be done at home.
If patients have undergone surgery during their treatments, they most often work with physical therapists who are able to design workout programs for them. However, if they do not have surgery and do not meet with a physical therapist, they can still find helpful exercises for cancer patients online. In fact, the website for American Cancer Society, provides a number of activities that help people gain strength and energy while battling mesothelioma and other forms of cancer.
Some of these exercises do not require patients to stand. Indeed, people can exercise their arms by doing an activity called the shoulder blade stretch. While sitting down at a desk or table, a patient can put his or her arms face down on the surface. The person then stretches his or her arms across the table as far as they can go. This exercise stretches the shoulder blades and arms; it also assists in strengthening the person's muscles.
Doctors also note that bending from side to side while sitting in a chair helps increase a person's flexibility and blood circulation. While sitting in a chair, patients can stretch their arms over their heads and then bend to either side, all the while keeping their arms elevated. They should bend from the waist and keep their legs still. This exercise proves especially helpful to people who have had surgery on their breasts or abdomens.
Patients can even lie down to exercise. They can lie on the floor or a mattress and then lift their legs to be even with their hips. They may do this several times to strengthen their leg muscles and improve their flexibility in their thighs and calf muscles. This activity assists people who have had colon surgery or surgery on another part of their lower abdomen. Instead of being inactive, low impact exercises, such as this activity, help patients regain strength in their legs. It also may help them regain mobility after having surgery.
When patients feel up to it, they can begin a walking regimen. Walking, as most physicians note, proves to be an ideal activity that is both low impact and beneficial to cancer patients. In fact, walking exercises most areas of the body, including the leg and arm muscles. Patients can begin with short walks around their neighborhoods and increase the distances as they become accustomed to the physical activity.
